The simple answer

The Utah Veterans Cemetery does not charge a fee for a veteran’s burial, and families can use any funeral home. Eligible spouses and dependent children can be buried there for a fee of $1,032 per burial or niche starting October 1, 2026. The fee changes every October 1. Ask for burial at least 24 hours ahead during business hours. Only government markers are permitted, so a privately bought headstone cannot be used.

Who can be buried there

The cemetery serves veterans discharged under conditions other than dishonorable, and it asks for the veteran’s DD-214 or other official discharge document. Its brochure also names reservists and National Guard members who, at the time of death, were entitled to retired pay, or would have been entitled had they reached age 60.

Spouses and dependent children

The brochure says the spouse or dependent children of an eligible veteran may also be buried there “under certain circumstances.” It does not list those circumstances, and it says there is a fee for a spouse or dependent child. The office told us the fee is $1,032 per burial or niche starting October 1, 2026, and that it changes every October 1. Call the office at 801-254-9036 with the specific situation.

State vs. national veterans cemeteries

The Utah Veterans Cemetery is run by the State of Utah. VA national cemeteries, including the Southern Utah National Cemetery in Cedar City, are run by the VA. They are separate systems with separate rules.

Burial and niche options

The cemetery lists three options for cremated remains:

  • In-ground urn burial.
  • A granite columbarium, where an urn is placed in a niche.
  • A Memorial Garden for scattering ashes.

For in-ground casket burial, call the office to confirm current availability and any choices of location within the cemetery. Cemeteries often set their own rules on which options are open, so ask before you plan.

Markers

The cemetery says only government markers are permitted. A headstone bought privately cannot be used here. Ask the office how the government marker is ordered and when it will be set.

How to schedule a burial

Families can choose any funeral home. Here is how the process usually works:

  • The funeral home faxes the veteran’s DD-214 to the cemetery.
  • The funeral home calls the cemetery to reserve a date and time. Families can also call the office directly.
  • The cemetery asks for burial requests at least 24 hours in advance, during business hours.

The office is open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The grounds are open to visitors from dawn to dusk every day.

The VA’s pre-need eligibility program does not apply to state veterans cemeteries. If you want to plan ahead for this cemetery, ask the office what it can confirm in advance.

Chapel, honors, and visiting

The cemetery has a chapel that seats about 150. Its brochure says to contact the office about an Honor Guard or Flag Ceremony. The office told us the funeral home usually arranges honors, especially for a casket burial. If the funeral home doesn’t, the cemetery will help the family request them. For the general rules on military honors, see military funeral honors.

Questions to ask the cemetery

  1. What is the fee for a spouse or dependent child?
The office told us $1,032 per burial or niche starting October 1, 2026. It changes every October 1, so ask for the current amount.
  2. What burial types are open for my situation?
Casket, urn in ground, or niche. Availability can change.
  3. How is the government marker ordered, and how long until it is set?
Only government markers are permitted, so the timing matters if the family is waiting to visit.
  4. What does the Honor Guard and Flag Ceremony include, and what should we request?
It can overlap with honors the funeral home requests from the military. Ask so the family knows what to expect.
  5. Can we use the chapel, and on what dates?
Chapel rental is $150. Ask about times and any limits.
