How to read these prices: each figure is the provider’s own price, from its price list, website or a phone call, checked in August or September 2026. It’s not a quote, so confirm before you decide. Traditional burial is the funeral home’s charges; the casket, vault and cemetery are extra unless the row says otherwise. The $157 state cremation permit is extra unless the row says it’s included. How we find and check prices
Comparing prices — read this first
It’s not an apples-to-apples comparison, and here’s exactly why
The vault-setting fee
Some homes cut the vault price and recover it through a separately-listed setting fee. Comparing vault line items alone can point you to the wrong conclusion.
The casket, not just the price
“One’s a Kia, one’s a BMW.” Casket prices aren’t comparable across providers without knowing the maker and line.
The cremation container
It’s legally required and it costs money — but quoted prices often leave it out. A $1,000 quote and a $1,300 quote may be identical.
Other things that can raise or lower the price: transportation, the funeral home’s staff and services, paperwork and death certificates, identification and viewing, the urn, the ceremony itself, and after-hours fees. Ask about each one when you compare providers.
Jenkins-Soffe, Memorial Murray, Utah Simple Cremations, or Vista — what actually differs
The practical differences come down to what’s included, not just the sticker price.
Provider(s)
What actually differs
Utah Simple Cremations
The lowest all-in direct-cremation price in Murray ($995, permits included), and owned by Larkin Mortuary (disclosed).
Memorial Murray Mortuary
Offers full traditional service options, priced the same “Package Value” way as its Sandy sibling location.
Jenkins-Soffe Funeral Chapels
Its direct-cremation price depends on the container: $1,625 with your own, rising to $10,055 if a casket is chosen. Ask which container a quote assumes.
Vista Funerals and Cremations
Publishes package prices and separate all-inclusive totals that add the permit, one death certificate, a container and an urn credit. Package prices require buying the casket or container from Vista.
None of these is the “better” choice — the right fit depends on what your family needs. The Wayfinder Plan above can help narrow that down faster than reading everything on this page.

Murray specifics
Murray’s municipal cemetery is already sold out of standard plots
Murray City’s own published fee schedule lists its Standard/Monument lots as “Sold Out.” Grave opening/closing still runs $700 for residents ($900 non-resident), a double-depth opening is $950/$1,200, and a cremation niche opening is $100/$150 — those fees still apply to existing plot owners and cremation niches, which the city is still selling. See Murray City’s current fee schedule, captured September 16, 2026.
The LDS Church’s stance on cremation has shifted
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints leaves the choice of burial or cremation to the family, and its official handbook affirms that the Resurrection applies to every member regardless of how the body was treated after death. In practice, a full viewing and funeral service followed by cremation is a common, faith-consistent path here — not a contradiction. Read the Church’s official policy.
Death certificates and paperwork
Utah’s Office of Vital Records charges $35 for the first certified copy of a death certificate, $10 for each additional copy, and $7 for a burial transit permit — the state’s current fee schedule, effective July 2026. Certificates can be ordered directly through the state’s online portal.
Other ways Wayfinder can help
Not everything is urgent right now — some of this can wait
Estate & paperwork planning
Certified death certificates, probate, and what banks and insurers will ask for — a plain walkthrough of the paperwork most families end up piecing together on their own.
Bringing someone home from another state usually means a charge from the funeral home where the death happened, plus $995 to $3,999 for a Salt Lake County funeral home to receive them. A death abroad can cost $10,000 or more. Some prepaid plans include away-from-home transport; ask whether yours does.
Organ and tissue donation decisions are usually made within hours, grief and hospice bereavement support is often free through local organizations, and headstone or monument choices can wait until you’re ready. We cover all three on our Planning Ahead page.
It depends entirely on the provider and what’s included. Among the Murray providers we’ve called directly, basic direct cremation ranges from about $995 to $3,490 for most providers, and Jenkins-Soffe’s own price list shows a wider range we’ve flagged rather than folded into a simple number. See the full comparison table above for real, individual figures.
Is Utah Simple Cremations a different company from Larkin Mortuary?
No. Utah Simple Cremations is owned by Larkin Mortuary. We disclose that ownership whenever we mention either business, so you’re never comparing them as if they were independent competitors.
Is Murray’s cemetery really sold out?
Murray City’s own published fee schedule lists Standard/Monument lots as “Sold Out.” Infant, cremain, and cremation-niche plots are still available — see the Local detail section above for current numbers and a link to the city’s own page.
