How to read these prices: each figure is the provider’s own price, from its price list, website or a phone call, checked in August or September 2026. It’s not a quote, so confirm before you decide. Traditional burial is the funeral home’s charges; the casket, vault and cemetery are extra unless the row says otherwise. The $157 state cremation permit is extra unless the row says it’s included. How we find and check prices

Comparing prices — read this first

It’s not an apples-to-apples comparison, and here’s exactly why

The vault-setting fee
Some homes cut the vault price and recover it through a separately-listed setting fee. Comparing vault line items alone can point you to the wrong conclusion.
The casket, not just the price
“One’s a Kia, one’s a BMW.” Casket prices aren’t comparable across providers without knowing the maker and line.
The cremation container
It’s legally required and it costs money — but quoted prices often leave it out. A $1,000 quote and a $1,300 quote may be identical.
Other things that can raise or lower the price: transportation, the funeral home’s staff and services, paperwork and death certificates, identification and viewing, the urn, the ceremony itself, and after-hours fees. Ask about each one when you compare providers.

What actually differs across Salt Lake City’s 14 providers

The practical differences come down to what’s included, not just the sticker price.

ProviderWhat actually differs
Cremation Society of Utah / Leavitt’s Mortuary Based in Ogden but sells cremation services statewide under this name — easy to confuse with Utah Cremation Society (part of Neil O’Donnell Funeral Home, below), but they’re two separate businesses.
Independent Funeral Service Prices differently for cash vs. credit. Ask for its current vault prices.
Inspired Funeral Home Priced closer to a direct-cremation baseline than most full-service homes on this page. Opened in January 2024 with no price increase since.
Just Cremations & Funerals Lists a $695 direct cremation with a utility urn included. Has offices in Salt Lake City and Provo; the private viewing in its $1,495 package is at the Provo location. Its price list is dated January 2025.
Kramer Family Funeral Home Lists a $639 direct cremation and no service or burial packages, so a funeral is priced item by item. Owns its crematory. Located in West Valley City.
Larkin Mortuary (Downtown) Packages include more built-in service time — but require buying a casket or container directly from Larkin. Also owns Sunset Lawn Cemetery next door and the separate Utah Simple Cremations brand below.
Larkin Sunset Lawn A second Salt Lake City location on the same Larkin price list above — not a separate pricing structure. Has its own on-site cemetery.
Neil O’Donnell Funeral Home (Utah Cremation Society) Also does business as Utah Cremation Society and Wiscombe Memorial — one business with the same address, phone number and price list. Offers aquamation as well as cremation.
Neptune Society Cremation only — no burial offered. One Utah office serves the whole state for this national company. Holds its own ocean scattering rights (the source of the Neptune name). Its price list shows scattering with staff present at $569, or with an attendant at sea from $1,795; a guaranteed return of remains if death occurs away from home was quoted to us by phone at $599 and is not on the price list. None of these show in the price above.
Peel Funeral Home Located in Magna, with prices from an online price list dated January 2024. Cremation with a service is sold in four set tiers, from embalming with a family viewing to a church service.
SereniCare Funeral Home Lists an $895 direct cremation and graveside and funeral plans that include embalming and a funeral coach. Prices are from its website. Located in South Salt Lake.
Starks Funeral Parlor Offers a lower-cost “Green” burial option alongside its standard traditional service.
Utah Simple Cremations A discount, checkout-based cremation brand owned by Larkin Mortuary, operating out of the Larkin Sunset Lawn address above — no in-person arrangement required.
Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park & Mortuary Located in Millcreek, just outside Salt Lake City proper — included here for its close proximity to the city. Same corporate parent (Dignity Memorial) as Neptune Society above.

None of these is the “better” choice — the right fit depends on what your family needs. The Wayfinder Plan above can help narrow that down faster than reading everything on this page.

Salt Lake City specifics

A curved stone memorial wall with cremation niches
Salt Lake City Cemetery charges non-residents more
Salt Lake City Cemetery, one of the largest municipally-owned cemeteries in the western U.S., prices interment by residency: a cremation plot is $586 for city residents versus $820 for everyone else, and a full adult burial runs $1,172 versus $1,676. The city also requires cremated remains to be interred at least 16 inches deep, so a private in-ground placement needs a provider equipped for it. See the city’s current fee schedule (effective July 2026).

The LDS Church’s stance on cremation has shifted
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints leaves the choice of burial or cremation to the family, and its official handbook affirms that the Resurrection applies to every member regardless of how the body was treated after death. In practice, that means a full viewing and funeral service followed by cremation is a common, faith-consistent path in Salt Lake City — not a contradiction. Read the Church’s official policy.
A small stack of paperwork documents
Death certificates and paperwork
Utah’s Office of Vital Records charges $35 for the first certified copy of a death certificate, $10 for each additional copy, and $7 for a burial transit permit — the state’s current fee schedule, effective July 2026. Certificates can be ordered directly through the state’s online portal.

If a death happens away from home
Bringing someone home from another state usually means a charge from the funeral home where the death happened, plus $995 to $3,999 for a Salt Lake County funeral home to receive them. A death abroad can cost $10,000 or more. Some prepaid plans include away-from-home transport; ask whether yours does.

Salt Lake City questions

Common questions, answered plainly

How much does cremation cost in Salt Lake City?
Direct cremation in Salt Lake City costs about $639 to $3,790, depending on the provider. Cremation with a service costs $2,800 to $7,000. Most of the spread comes from what each quote includes: some leave out the cremation container, transportation, or death certificate copies. Each provider’s own figure, with the date we confirmed it, is in Our Local Research above.
Who offers cremation in Salt Lake City?
Cremation in Salt Lake City is offered by full-service funeral homes such as Larkin Mortuary, Starks Funeral Parlor, and Inspired Funeral Home, and by cremation-only providers such as Neptune Society and Utah Simple Cremations (owned by Larkin). Our Local Research above lists the providers we’ve identified serving the city, with addresses and dated prices.
Is Utah Simple Cremations a different company from Larkin Mortuary?
No. Utah Simple Cremations is owned by Larkin Mortuary. We disclose that ownership whenever we mention either business, so you’re never comparing them as if they were independent competitors.
Does Salt Lake City publish its own cemetery pricing?
Yes. Salt Lake City publishes a fee schedule for the City Cemetery on slc.gov, covering July 1, 2026 to June 30, 2027. Opening and closing an adult grave is $1,172 for residents and $1,676 for non-residents, and a cremains space is $586 and $820. Perpetual care, headstone monitoring and extra charges for Saturday, Sunday, holiday and after-4pm burials are listed separately. Resident or non-resident depends on the deceased’s address at the time of death. The schedule covers opening, closing and related fees, not the price of the grave space itself. See the city’s current fee schedule, or call the Sexton Office at (801) 596-5020 to schedule a burial or ask about availability.
