Aquamation

Also called alkaline hydrolysis, water cremation, or flameless cremation.

Aquamation uses water, heat, and an alkaline solution instead of flame, and the family receives the remains the same way as with cremation.

In Utah

At least two Salt Lake County providers list it. Starks Funeral Parlor charges $2,500 for direct aquamation and $2,200 for direct cremation (price list effective August 17, 2025; aquamation price confirmed by phone September 29, 2026). Neil O’Donnell Funeral Home lists Simple Aquamation at $2,795 (effective September 1, 2026). Ask any provider whether it offers aquamation and where it’s performed.

How it compares

The remains returned to the family look much like cremated remains. Families who choose it often mention using less energy than flame cremation.
