Green burial is burial without embalming, in a biodegradable casket or shroud, and without a vault.
In Utah
It often costs more than a standard burial here, not less, because graves are hand-dug and need extra labor. Few Utah cemeteries allow it, because most require a vault. Ask each cemetery directly.
Starks Funeral Parlor lists green versions of its services, such as a $6,000 green funeral, and biodegradable caskets from $350 to $2,700 (effective August 17, 2025).
What it usually involves
- No embalming, or a non-toxic alternative
- A biodegradable casket, basket, or shroud
- No vault or grave liner
- Often a natural marker or none
