Embalming
Listed on price lists as “Embalming.” Related lines: “Other preparation of the body” and “Care without embalming.”
Embalming temporarily preserves a body by replacing the blood with a preservative solution, most often so the family can hold a viewing several days after the death.
In Utah
Utah requires a body to be embalmed or refrigerated if burial or cremation won’t happen within 24 hours of the death. Refrigeration counts, so embalming is not your only option. Once the included days run out, Memorial Mortuaries charges $85 per day and McDougal Funeral Home charges $140 per day for refrigeration. Starks Funeral Parlor lists “care without embalming” for $500.
Many Utah families choose embalming because a traditional Latter-day Saint funeral usually includes a viewing, often at the meetinghouse right before the service. It’s the viewing, and the funeral home’s policy for viewings, that usually decides it.

What “embalming required” can mean
Funeral homes set their own policies on when they need embalming, so the same request can get different answers.
- 1Required for any viewingSome homes won’t hold a viewing, even for family only, without embalming.Cannon Mortuary lists a family-only viewing before cremation at $2,695, with embalming included, compared with $1,900 for cremation with no viewing. (Price list effective February 1, 2026.)
- 2Not needed for a short private viewingOther homes let immediate family see the person briefly without embalming, usually soon after the death.Independent Funeral Service includes a private family viewing within 24 hours in its direct cremation price (price list effective August 11, 2025). Cremation Society of Utah offers a private identification viewing for up to 7 people as a $495 add-on (confirmed by phone August 25, 2026).
- 3Inside a package, or its own lineIn some packages embalming is part of the flat price. Elsewhere it’s a separate charge, and dressing, cosmetics and placing the person in the casket may be separate again.Broomhead Funeral Home’s $4,995 traditional package includes embalming (price list effective June 15, 2026). Most lists we collected show it as its own line.
What the rules say
- A funeral home must ask before embalming. It can’t charge for embalming you didn’t approve, unless a law required it.
- The price list has to say it. The printed price list must state that, except in certain special cases, embalming isn’t required by law.
- A home can require embalming for its own viewings. That’s allowed as a policy. If you don’t want embalming, you can choose a service without a viewing, or a private viewing where the home offers one.
