Traditional Funeral
Also called a full-service funeral or traditional burial.
A traditional funeral is a viewing, a funeral service, and then burial, usually with embalming and a casket.
In Utah
For many Latter-day Saint families the traditional pattern is a viewing, often at the meetinghouse before the funeral, then a family prayer, the funeral, a graveside dedication, and a luncheon. Families can keep all of this and choose cremation afterward by using a rental casket.

What a “traditional” package can include
- 1The casket, or notSome packages require you to buy the casket from the funeral home. Others leave it out of the price.Cannon Mortuary’s weekday traditional funeral is $4,495, with the casket bought from Cannon (effective February 1, 2026). Premier Funeral Services’ $2,495 funeral package leaves out the casket and vault (effective July 15, 2024).
- 2The burial vault, or notThe vault is a cemetery requirement, and packages treat it differently.Serenity Funeral Home’s $3,495 traditional package requires buying the casket and the outer burial container from Serenity (effective August 1, 2026).
- 3The cemetery’s charges, almost neverThe plot and the opening and closing of the grave are billed by the cemetery, not the funeral home.
Ask“Does this package include the casket and the vault, and what will the cemetery charge separately?”
