Dedicatory Prayer

Also called a grave dedication.

Utah

A dedicatory prayer is a prayer at the graveside that dedicates the grave as a resting place, offered by a Melchizedek Priesthood holder with authorization from the leader conducting the service.

How it works

It usually happens at the end of the graveside service. The family often chooses who offers it, with the presiding leader’s approval.

For cremated remains, the presiding leader decides whether to dedicate the place where the ashes will be kept.

You’ll hear it called

“Dedicating the grave” or “the dedication.”
