Opening and Closing Fee

Also called interment fee or opening and closing charge.

The opening and closing fee is the cemetery's charge to dig the grave and then fill and restore it after the burial. It's billed separately from the plot.

In Utah

$500–$2,500
Opening and closing, depending on the cemetery

It’s one of the costs families most often forget. A prepaid plan with a funeral home doesn’t lock it in; only a contract with the cemetery does. Niches have an opening and closing fee too: $495 in one niche package at Larkin Sunset Lawn (checkout, August 17, 2026).

What to ask the cemetery

  • Is the fee higher on weekends or holidays?
  • Is the vault setting included?
  • Does it change for a double-depth plot or a second burial?
