General Price List
Often called the GPL. We say “itemized price list” in plain-language copy.
A General Price List is the itemized price list the FTC requires every funeral home to give you, to keep, when you ask in person about arrangements.
What must be on it
Under the FTC Funeral Rule, the list shows the price of each good and service the home sells, so you can buy only what you want. It must include:
- The basic services fee, the one charge every arrangement includes
- Transfer of remains, embalming, other preparation, and use of facilities for a viewing or service
- Direct cremation and immediate burial prices
- The price range of caskets and outer burial containers, or a separate list for each
- Required disclosures, such as that embalming usually isn’t required by law
Varies by provider
Why two lists that look alike aren’t comparable
- 1The same fee goes by different namesThe core fee that every arrangement includes is labeled differently from home to home.Larkin calls it “Basic services of funeral director and staff.” Memorial Mortuaries calls it a “Professional Services Fee.” McDougal Funeral Home calls it a “Basic Service Charge.”
- 2Packages and itemized prices sit side by sideA package price and an itemized total for the same service can both appear, and they rarely match.Jenkins-Soffe lists its traditional funeral at $5,395 as a package and $6,395 itemized (effective November 1, 2022).
- 3Casket prices are often somewhere elseMany lists give only a casket price range and say the full list is available at the funeral home.Larkin, Cannon Mortuary, and Jenkins-Soffe all say their full casket lists are available in person.
Ask“Is this your current list, and where is the casket price list?”
Check the effective date
Every list should show the date its prices took effect. The lists we collected in 2026 had effective dates from November 2022 to September 2026. An older list may still be current, but it’s worth asking.
How to read one in 10 minutes
- Find the basic services fee first. Every other price is added to it unless a package says it’s included.
- Find the line that matches what you want: direct cremation, immediate burial, or a package.
- Circle anything marked “required” or “no allowance for items not used.”
- Ask what the cemetery or crematory will charge separately.
Common questions
Can I get a General Price List by phone or email?
Funeral homes must give prices over the phone if you ask. The printed list must be given to you when you ask in person. Many Salt Lake County homes emailed their lists to us when we asked.
Do funeral homes have to post prices online?
The FTC has considered requiring it. Check the FTC’s Funeral Rule page for the current rule. Many Utah homes don’t post full prices online yet.
What's the difference between the General Price List and a casket price list?
The General Price List covers services and gives casket prices as a range. The casket price list shows each casket and its price, and the home must show it to you before you discuss caskets.
