What does direct cremation cost in Utah?
Direct cremation is usually the simplest cremation arrangement, with no viewing or funeral service before the cremation. In Utah, the price depends on what the provider includes: transportation, the cremation itself, the container, and other costs. This page covers what to look for before you compare prices.
Direct cremation prices on the 2026 Salt Lake County price lists Wayfinder collected. What each price includes varies by provider. Use this range as a starting point, not a quote.
What is direct cremation?
For many families, the steps look like this:
- A death occurs
- A funeral home or cremation provider takes your loved one into care
- Required arrangements and paperwork
- Cremation
- Cremated remains returned to the family
Direct cremation usually means
- No viewing before the cremation
- No funeral service before the cremation
- No traditional casket. A simple container is typically used.
- A simpler arrangement focused on the cremation itself
What the direct cremation cost usually includes
- Basic services of the funeral director and staff
- Transfer of your loved one into the provider’s care
- Required paperwork and permits
- The cremation
- A basic or alternative cremation container, if provided
- Return of the cremated remains
- Additional transportation or mileage
- After-hours or special transfer charges, if they apply
- Death certificates
- An urn or upgraded container
- A cemetery, niche, or other final resting place
- An obituary
- Flowers
- A memorial service or gathering
- Additional visitation or viewing
- Other optional merchandise or services
What is in each column depends on the provider and on what your family chooses. More on this: What’s included vs. what’s extra.
Why two direct cremation prices can look so different
One provider may advertise a lower price while another quotes a higher one. The difference often comes from:
- What is included
- One price may include more services than another.
- Transportation
- Distance and the circumstances of the transfer can affect the total.
- Cremation fees
- Some providers include the crematory charge in their direct cremation price. Others list it separately.
- Container or urn
- A basic container may be included, while upgraded merchandise costs more.
- Additional services
- A memorial, viewing, or visitation changes the arrangement and the cost.
Compare what each price includes before you compare the numbers.
Direct cremation vs. cremation with a service
The main difference is what the family chooses to include around the cremation, such as a viewing, visitation, funeral or memorial service, before or after the cremation.
The cremation is the same. The services around it are what can change the cost. See cremation with a service costs.
Choosing direct cremation doesn’t mean giving up a gathering. Many families hold a memorial or gathering afterward, and some providers include a short private goodbye. Direct cremation describes the cremation arrangement, not everything a family does to say goodbye.
Ask about more than “How much is cremation?”
Ask for the complete direct cremation price and what it includes:
“What is your total price for direct cremation, and what does that price include?”
Ask whether the quote includes transportation, the cremation itself, the container, required paperwork, and return of the cremated remains.
Ask for the General Price List
Under the FTC Funeral Rule, a funeral home’s General Price List must include itemized prices for the goods and services it offers, including its price for direct cremation. It can help you see what the provider charges and compare arrangements. See how to read a General Price List.
“What is the complete price for direct cremation, including anything I would need to pay separately?”
Ask the provider to show what is included, what is separate, and whether any costs will be paid to another provider.
Before you choose a direct cremation provider
- Ask for the direct cremation price.
- Ask exactly what is included.
- Ask what costs extra.
- Ask whether the cremation charge is included or separate.
- Ask whether transportation or mileage charges apply.
- Ask what container or urn is included.
- Ask for the General Price List.
- Ask for the complete total in writing.
Direct cremation doesn’t mean you can’t have a memorial. A family can choose direct cremation and hold a memorial or gathering later. The cremation and the ceremony don’t have to happen at the same time.
