Direct Cremation vs. Cremation: What Each Includes

People use “cremation” to mean two different things. One is a process. The other is a short list of arrangements, and they cost very different amounts. Here is how to tell them apart.

The simple answer

“Cremation” is the process. “Direct cremation” is an arrangement. In a direct cremation, the cremation happens with no viewing or service first, and the remains go back to the family. A cremation funeral is a viewing or service followed by cremation. In Salt Lake County, direct cremation costs $639 to $3,790 and cremation with a service costs $1,895 to $7,000 on the price lists Wayfinder collected.

Same process, different arrangement

The cremation itself is the same either way. What changes is everything around it: whether there is a viewing, a service, a casket, and how much the funeral home does before and after.

The FTC Funeral Rule describes direct cremation as cremation without a formal viewing, visitation or ceremony with the body present. A direct cremation doesn’t stop a family from holding a memorial later, at a time and place of its choosing.

What direct cremation usually includes

  • The basic services of the funeral director and staff
  • Transfer of your loved one into the provider’s care
  • Required paperwork and permits
  • The cremation
  • A simple container, not a traditional casket

What each price covers varies by provider. Some leave out the container, transportation, or copies of the death certificate. Utah’s state cremation permit is $157, and some providers add it to the headline price. The full list is in the direct cremation cost guide.

What a cremation funeral adds

A cremation funeral is a viewing or service followed by cremation, and it costs $1,895 to $7,000 in Salt Lake County. The $1,895 low end is a private family viewing before cremation. A memorial or public service starts at about $2,295. Families who want a traditional viewing and then cremation sometimes use a rental casket. The guide to cremation funeral costs has the detail.

How to compare quotes

Ask each provider the same three things: what the price includes, what it leaves out, and whether the state permit is added. Then compare line items, not totals. Each city page lists the providers serving that city, with their prices and the date we confirmed each one.

Common questions

Is direct cremation the same as cremation?
Not quite. Cremation is the process. Direct cremation is the arrangement with no viewing or service before the cremation, and the remains are returned to the family.
What is the difference between direct cremation and a cremation funeral?
A cremation funeral has a viewing or service before the cremation. Direct cremation has neither, which is why it generally costs less.
Does direct cremation include a service?
No. Direct cremation has no viewing or funeral service before the cremation. Families can hold a memorial separately, later.
Does the price include the state cremation permit?
It depends on the provider. Utah’s permit is $157, and some providers include it in the headline price while others add it. Ask when you compare quotes.
