Cremation With a Service

Varies by provider

Cremation with a service is cremation plus a gathering, held either before the cremation with the body present or afterward with the urn.

Before, during, and after cremation

Cremation is the disposition: it answers what happens to the body. It doesn’t decide whether there is a service. A service can come before the cremation, after it, or both, and some families choose none.

Before cremation
The person is present
  • Viewing or visitation
  • Funeral or religious service, often with a rental casket
  • A private family goodbye
Cremation
The disposition

What happens to the body. Every other choice sits before or after it.

After cremation
The urn or a photo is present
  • Memorial service or celebration of life
  • Burial, a niche, scattering, or keeping the remains (see cremated remains options)

In Utah

Many Latter-day Saint families keep the traditional viewing and funeral and choose cremation afterward, using a rental casket. The price for that version is usually close to a traditional funeral without the burial costs.
