Final expense insurance is a small whole-life insurance policy meant to pay for a funeral. Unlike a preneed plan, it pays a beneficiary and doesn't lock any funeral prices.
How it differs from preneed
- The money goes to a person you name, who can spend it on anything.
- No funeral home is chosen, and no prices are locked.
- Policies often have a waiting period before the full benefit is paid.
What to ask
- Is there a waiting period, and what does it pay during that time?
- Do the premiums stay the same?
