Headstone and Grave Marker
Also called a monument, grave marker, or flat marker.
A headstone stands upright at the grave; a flat marker lies level with the grass. Many cemeteries limit which kinds are allowed in each section.
What to check first
- The cemetery’s rules for size, material, and style in that section.
- Whether the cemetery charges a setting or installation fee.
- How long the monument company needs. Engraving often takes weeks.
For veterans
Eligible veterans can receive a government headstone or marker at no cost. See the Veterans guides.
