VA Burial Allowance
The VA burial allowance is a payment from the Department of Veterans Affairs toward burial and funeral costs for eligible veterans. The family usually pays the costs first and then applies to be repaid, so it works like a reimbursement. Some eligible surviving spouses are paid a set amount automatically, with no claim.
What to know
- The amounts change every October 1, so we keep current figures on the Veterans guide rather than here.
- The allowance is higher when the death is service-connected.
- There are separate amounts for burial, for a plot, and for transportation in some cases.
How to apply
Families apply to the VA after the funeral, usually with the DD-214, the death certificate, and receipts. The funeral home can help.
