Understanding burial costs

Direct or Immediate Burial Cost in Utah

Immediate burial, also called direct burial, generally means burial without a traditional viewing or funeral service beforehand. The funeral home’s immediate burial price is usually not the whole cost, because the cemetery and other expenses are often paid separately.

What does an immediate burial cost?

The direct burial cost you hear from a funeral home usually covers only the funeral home’s part. The casket option can move that price up or down, and the grave, opening and closing, and marker are usually paid to the cemetery. Add them together to see the complete cost.

What direct or immediate burial means

  1. A death occurs
  2. The funeral home takes your loved one into care
  3. Required arrangements and paperwork
  4. A casket or container is chosen
  5. Burial at the cemetery

Immediate burial generally means burial without a traditional viewing or funeral ceremony beforehand. “Immediate” describes the arrangement, not a set number of hours. The timing depends on the family, the funeral home, and the cemetery. For more on the arrangement itself, see direct and immediate burial.

What an immediate burial price may include

Funeral homes structure this price differently. Depending on the provider, it may include:

  • Basic professional services of the funeral director and staff
  • Transfer of your loved one into the funeral home’s care
  • Necessary arrangements and paperwork
  • Sheltering and care of the remains
  • Transportation to the cemetery
  • A casket or alternative container, depending on the option chosen

Under the FTC Funeral Rule, a funeral home that offers immediate burial must list it on its General Price List as a price range, with a separate price for when you provide the casket and a price for each casket or container option it supplies.

The casket can change the price

The same immediate burial can have several price points depending on the casket or container. On the 2026 Salt Lake County price lists Wayfinder collected, the gap between the “you provide the casket” price and the highest casket option at the same funeral home ranged from about $1,300 to more than $15,000. Ask:

  • Does the immediate burial price include a casket or container?
  • What is the price if we provide the casket?
  • Which casket or container options come with the quoted price?
  • Can we see the casket price list?

Under the FTC Funeral Rule, you can buy a casket elsewhere, and the funeral home cannot refuse to use it or charge you a fee for doing so.

The funeral home price is not the whole direct burial cost

What your family will pay in total

A quote for immediate burial may cover only the funeral home’s portion. Ask for the complete picture, including costs you will pay directly to the cemetery or another provider. See what’s included vs. what’s extra and cemetery costs.

What may cost extra

Depending on the funeral home and the cemetery, these may be separate:

  • Additional transportation or mileage
  • A casket or upgraded container
  • The cemetery plot or burial space
  • Opening and closing the grave
  • A burial vault or outer burial container, if the cemetery requires one or you choose one
  • A marker or headstone, and setting it
  • Death certificates
  • An obituary and flowers
  • A graveside service
  • Additional staff, equipment, or special arrangements

No state law requires an outer burial container, according to the FTC, but many cemeteries do. Ask the cemetery.

Immediate burial vs. burial with a graveside service

Immediate burial

Burial without a service beforehand

  • No traditional funeral or viewing before the burial
  • Usually a simpler arrangement
  • May involve fewer facility and staff services
  • The family may still gather separately
Graveside service

Burial with a service at the cemetery

  • A gathering at the grave during the burial
  • May involve staff and equipment for the service
  • May add ceremony-related costs
  • Does not necessarily include a viewing or a funeral at the funeral home

A graveside service is an added service around the burial. It is not the same as a traditional funeral with a viewing and ceremony.

Why two immediate burial prices can look so different

Two providers may quote different immediate burial prices because their quotes include different things:

What the service includes
Staff time, care of the remains, and paperwork can be bundled differently.
Transportation and distance
Whether transfer and the trip to the cemetery are included, and any mileage beyond a set area.
The casket or container
Whether one is included, and which one.
What the number covers
Whether the quote is only the funeral home’s charges or includes anything paid elsewhere.

Compare what each price includes before you compare the numbers.

If you ask one question
“What is the complete cost for immediate burial, including anything I will pay separately?”

Ask the provider to identify what is included in the immediate burial price, what is charged separately, what will be paid to the cemetery, and whether the casket or container and transportation are included.

Before you choose an immediate burial arrangement

  1. What is your total price for immediate burial, and what exactly is included?
  2. Does the price include transportation? Are there mileage charges?
  3. Does it include a casket or container? What is the price if we provide the casket?
  4. What cemetery costs will we pay separately, including the plot and opening and closing?
  5. Does this cemetery require a burial vault?
  6. What will the marker or headstone cost?
  7. Would a graveside service add a separate charge?
  8. Can you give us the complete itemized total in writing?

Your General Price List can help

If a funeral home offers immediate burial, its General Price List must show the price. Use it to see what the offering includes and to compare it with other providers. See how to read a General Price List.

You can still gather

Choosing immediate burial does not stop a family from gathering. A private gathering, memorial, or celebration of life can happen at another time or place.
